Graduate Students (MSc or PhD)
Potential openings for graduate students vary each year. Interested students should make contact anytime throughout the year, but preferably no later than February for normal admission in September (admission is possible for either January or May). Students can pursue either an MSc thesis, MSc course work, or PhD degree in our lab through the Dept. of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences. (https://www.uoguelph.ca/hhns/), housed within the College of Biological Sciences (http://www.uoguelph.ca/cbs/). Interested applicants are encouraged to consult these websites for admission details, program requirements, and funding support of either program of interest.
Generally for MSc thesis applicants a relevant Bachelor's degree is required with an overall academic average of at least 75%, and for PhD applicants a relevant Master's degree with an overall academic average of at least 80%. Regarding funding, the annual base salary for MSc. and PhD. stipends in the College of Biological Sciences (CBS) at the University of Guelph is $21,000 and $25,000/year, respectively (*Note* value may change). Therefore, thesis based graduate students are encouraged to apply to provincial and national funding agencies to offset the cost of graduate training (Links below). I am more than happy to help write and edit a scholarship application.
Applicants who hold at least an 80% average over their past two years should apply in the fall (October) for relevant scholarships from NSERC, CIHR, OGS to be awarded in the spring (May) of the following year. Those students with external funding will have priority in receiving an acceptance offer to work in my lab.
